Michigan gold to my limited
understanding, is famous for a few different types of
characteristics; I'll pass on what I know and have heard
along the way. One characteristic is it's mixed with
silver, and some other things such as iron copper, pyrite, lead,
etc. Some of the largest iron and copper mines in the world
were there. Pyrite is an easily misunderstood
term and concept of what that actually means. The chemical
formula and variety of actual minerals being present and
combinations and amounts there of ,vary wildly in different
types. Some are worth a lot; some worth little. Michigan has
very rich deposits of iron, copper, silver, gold and another
little known and talked about subject, radioactive minerals.
All are quite abundant throughout the Lake Superior basin. That's a fact!
The ultimate questions asked and answered
are: Is there gold in that pyrite / sulphide?
Well yes
there is. Is there pyrite in that gold? Well yes there is.
Is there enough precious metal in this stuff that they
crushed it and in the end came out with tons of gold and
silver? Yes they did and for almost a hundred years, too.
You say toe-may-toe I say toe-mah-toe. Is there gold in it?
Yes the big question is, how much? the answer is, I don't
know. Is it from the mine? Yes it is; 100% positive. Is
there precious metal in it ? Yes there is. How much ? I
don't know!
The richest gold ore ever found in the
state of Michigan was a chalcopyrite with over 4 ounces of
gold per ton with a good amount of silver / copper and lead
per ton on top of that. A very valuable and fabulously rich gold ore, and also one of the
richest gold ores in the United States History, was a chalcopyrite from Michigan.. Folks , I said a
chalcopyrite / pyrite; basically fool's gold. When that
assay came back he sure didn't call that ore fools gold
ever again, and either would I.
My personal observation is the gold
and silver purity is greatest in the quartz and less in
the marble. Usually more sulphide / pyrites / irons are
mixed with the gold in the marble, which was one of the
famous metallurgical problems the mine had processing the
ore, causing very high and deadly pollution
in the area, even to this day. Thisis why sulphide mining is such a touchy
subject throughout the area to this day. Silver in the
marble is a very rare thing and not common at all. There are also many different / rare / metals / minerals /
and some radioactive that I can not identify. Don't worry nothing
dangerous.

Marble
Gold Ore Ropes Mine Specimen Rough
Gold Ore Collector Piece A+ Ropes Gold
Mine Michigan Specimen Rough app. 45 x 60 x 15 mm. Hard
to appreciate in a picture app 220 cts, lots of gold /
silver colored metal metallic globs all over this piece,
very cool. It's a nice one, formed just to the side of
quartz vein, with a little still left on. Will make a very
nice display piece. This is an odd one; a lot of
this metal looks white, doesn't look like the normal marble
ore, and something different about it doesn't look like a
pyrite either. Not sure what it is but looks pretty darn cool. Please
continue to read below!
No idea of the purity and exact type of
all metals, silver gold lead iron pyrites etc. present. I am
not an assayer so all I can say is the Ropes Mine was the most
famous gold mine in Michigan history , producing thousands
of ounces of precious metal / gold and silver for nearly a
hundred years and the most famous gold mine in the state's
history. sulphide mining
