Yukon Gold mining – Gold Prospecting in the Yukon

WARNING GOLD FEVER VIDEO you have been warned

Absolutely breathtaking scenery in the beautiful northern part of Canada.  Take a short trip with me to Dawson City, Canada. Have a look at how the “average, not for TV” miner gets gold. No staged arguments, breakdowns, or deadlines.

No scripted drama, or ridiculous million ounce goals. Just average miners trying to make a few bucks and have a little fun doing it. The mining season lasts from May to the first of October, or as soon as the water freezes.

Is hydro-mining still legal in the yukon? Answer: In Dawson, water monitors are used infrequently. The conditions have to be right for it to be effective. Your claim needs to be in a steep sided valley, with room for drainage. The end result is the same as using an excavator and dump trucks except that water is used for transport. No more, or less dirt is moved using this method. And I would argue a 4 ft wide creek disturbs the environment much less than hours of large dump trucks over the ground, burning diesel. The overburden (waste dirt) that is moved down the creek is collected in settling ponds and the clean water is then returned to the source. The Yukon government (through your mining permit) controls where and how dirt is moved. They also include reclamation guidelines for every mining permit issued. (You have to clean up before you leave). 🙂
