 Gold Prospecting Beginner Tips

Basic tips for beginner weekend gold prospectors.

Yes, when you’re in isolated areas hunting for gold unless you are prepared it could make the difference between a successful weekend gold prospecting trip and a total disaster!

One thing that I didn’t mention in the video, is to also always go with at least one buddy, have a fully charged cell phone, take plenty of water and lastly have a basic first aid kit.

Personally, if you like the outdoors, you enjoy camping, you’ll probably love weekend gold prospecting. Here in San Diego, we usually wait till the end of October or November before going out to the Eastern desert areas of California and the Western areas of Arizona. Going to these locations at other times you can really run into extreme weather and temperatures.

The reason I have the mask on is because we were just starting up a gold dry washer. Most gold dry washers use a paper filter mask, personally I like this dual air filter mask. I purchased this mask from Harbor Freight.

The above video was done in Western Arizona near the Colorado River in December. This particular weekend the daytime temperatures were in the 70s and in the evening it was around 45 to 50°. Even with these cooler temperatures, we still ran into a baby rattlesnake. I think that when the daytime temperatures are warm, some of the rattlesnakes come out of hibernation. So you should always be prepared and watch where you’re stepping.

Sure, you can go out gold prospecting on your own, but you are usually in isolated areas, most of the time there is no cell reception and on most weekend trips we rarely see any other people. So, it really pays to go with at least one other person just to be on the safe side.

Lastly never go in the old gold mines or get too close to the open mine pits.
