I’d like to say thanks to all my readers and subscribers for making this website so popular!  naturally I continue to post or videos  of our local San Diego and Arizona gold prospecting adventures.

gold in quartz

Within a few days I’m scheduled to take a trip out to the Yuma  Arizona area to meet up with a local prospector who found a few quarts veins that are carrying gold in an old abandoned gold mine.  I’m looking forward to this trip, but, even though it’s only mid-March, unfortunately the temperature in Arizona is forecast to be about 95° tomorrow! So, I really don’t expect to get too much work done but would like to see these gold veins and actually get some quartz-gold specimens to bring home.

Sure, one of the looking for visible gold in the quartz, but, just because you can see any gold on the surface of the courts doesn’t mean that is not gold inside. So, how do you go about determining what courts may have gold?  Usually, you look for quarts that have iron/ rust stains as one indicator. but, that alone is usually not enough to make it worth your time to haul out every quartz rock and then smash them up and pan out the fine powder to see if there’s any gold.

Many of the old mining sites have hundreds and hundreds of quartz veins that are visible. Breaking quartz  out of the vein is very hard work  especially in the desert heat. plus, the vast majority of these quartz viens  do not carry any gold, or if they do, it is such a tiny amount, that it really doesn’t pay for the effort to extract it!

What I do, is use my sensitive gold bug detector to see if I can pick up any faint signals in exposed quartz veins. naturally, if I get a decent signal it  might be worth taking out a small piece and crushing it.  Now, I’m also using a very  sensitive  handheld gold detector that is ideal for this purpose and also for  searching the walls of old gold mines for signals that might indicate nearby gold.
